Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the holy Season of Lent.
Lent is a six-week season of penance, reflection, and fasting, which prepares us to celebrate Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday when we attained redemption. Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. The imposition of ashes is an ancient penitential practice symbolizing our dependence upon God's mercy and forgiveness.
Ash Wednesday is a day of fast (only one full meal and two smaller ones) and abstinence (NO meat) in the Catholic Church.
