The University of St. Thomas volleyball team
played with a mission in the UST Labor Day Classic on Aug. 31 in Jerabeck Gym. The Celts split two matches for the day, but, in the second match, UST defeated a nationally-elite squad.
UST beat Spring Hill College, from Mobile, Ala., in its second match of the day in five sets 25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 23-25 and 15-11, snapping the Badger’s 40-match regular season win streak. Spring Hill was ranked 12th in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
UST junior Kirsten Kubicek
had a double-double with 20 kills and 19 digs. Senior Brittany Weiler
led UST with 60 assists, and junior Shirley Paul
had 30 digs. It was the fourth straight five-set match for the Celts, who are now 2-5 on the season.
UST lost its the first match to Montana Tech of the University of Montana in five sets 25-27, 25-11, 22-25, 25-23 and 6-15 . Senior Stephanie Biediger
led the Celts for the second straight match with 21 kills. Kubicek had 20 kills, and Weiler added 52 assists.
The Celts will play Calumet College of St. Joseph, from Indiana, and Trinity International University, from Illinois, on Sept. 1 to finish the tournament.
