UST Graduate to Intern at George W. Bush Presidential Center

Photo: Mallory WendellMallory Wendell, University of St. Thomas Class of 2011 graduate, has been awarded a summer internship at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, where she will work for former First Lady Laura Bush.

Wendell came to UST from Austin in 2007 on both volleyball and academic scholarships. She played on the All Conference NAIA Lady Celts volleyball team all four years and graduated with a degree in communication.

Wendell said she appreciated the UST Communication Department’s emphasis on internships because it encourages students to experience the real-world job force.

“The Communication Department’s requirement to complete an internship before you graduate helps you to put yourself out there,” said Wendell. “I originally wanted an internship at FOX or another news station, but I ended up at Susan G. Koman and it really opened my eyes. I never thought I would be interested in a non-profit. When I had the chance to work at the George Bush Center, I realized it was a great opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

The George W. Bush Presidential Center partners with Southern Methodist University in Dallas and was created shortly after Bush completed his last presidential term. It is an institute to develop solutions to global challenges, guided by the principles of universality of freedom, accountable leadership, dignity of human life and service to others.
