The University of St. Thomas hosted its first-ever home golf tournament on Oct. 8-9 at Sterling Country Club. The Talamonti Invitational was both a men’s and women’s event, which featured a strong field and Celt accolades.
The men’s event included Texas Wesleyan University and Our Lady of the Lake University, who were both ranked in the top five in the national preseason poll. The women hosted University of Houston-Victoria and University of Texas-Brownsville.
The Celt men finished third with rounds of 301-305. UST’s Zach Cabra
took co-medalist honors with rounds of 73-72. He edged out Texas Wesleyan’s Blake Vinson in a sudden death playoff to take the individual championship. Texas Wesleyan won the team event with rounds of 292-293.
The women’s event was won by UH-Victoria, who fired rounds of 338-336. UH-Victoria also had the individual champion, Becky Benchot, who shot a two-round total of 163. Kara Jones
was the low Celt with a two-day total of 168, which was good enough to finish fifth and earn her third top-10 finish at UST.
The men will play next against Houston Baptist University on Oct. 21-23 in Missouri City, Texas. The women will have a break until the Scholarship Tee Up Tournament on Nov. 5 in Pine Forrest, Texas.
