64th Mardi Gras Gala Honors Daniel Cardinal DiNardo
To raise funds for student scholarships, University supporters will celebrate at this year’s sold out Mardi Gras Gala celebration on Tuesday, March 4, benefiting the St. Thomas Fund.
The 64th Annual Mardi Gras Gala will take place at the River Oaks Country Club. The Gala is the University’s premier scholarship fundraising event and guests are invited to revel in the spirit of giving.
This year’s honoree, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, is recognized for his work throughout the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston during the past 10 years. Outside Houston, DiNardo continues his service to the Catholic Church, recently serving as a Cardinal-Elector in the Papal Conclave of 2013. His brother bishops also selected him as the Vice-President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
“We are very fortunate to have Cardinal DiNardo on our Board of Directors and gratefully recognize his contributions to UST and to the entire Catholic community for the past 10 years,” said Dr. Robert Ivany, St. Thomas President.
The event chairs are Virginia ‘Ginny’ ’79 and Dennis Malloy. Both Ginny and Dennis are active members in the Catholic community. Ginny, who received her M.Ed. from UST, served as the principal of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School for many years. Dennis and Ginny are members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and Dennis acts as Lieutenant for the Southwestern USA. The Malloy’s have long ties to UST; Malloy Hall is named for Dennis’ parents, Felice and Eugene Malloy. Both Dennis and his father, Eugene, served on the UST Board of Directors. Michele Malloy, Dennis’ sister, is the current Board Chair.
Mardi Gras King and Queen are seniors Cody Miller and Meredith Smith. In keeping with UST’s values, they embody the University’s mission to educate leaders of faith and character.
At the heart of the Gala is the University’s commitment to providing students with a religious and ethical values-based education, while ensuring it is affordable. The scholarship fund provides financial assistance to students from across the Houston region – and around the world – who dream of attending UST but lack the financial means. Last year, the Gala, “A Mardi Gras Tradition,” raised $800,000 for scholarships.
Next year’s gala will mark the 65th Mardi Gras celebration hosted by the university and will be chaired by Trini Mendenhall and Jan and Oniel Mendenhall ’04. The gala will be on February 17, 2015 at Hilton-Americas Houston.
