St. Thomas Says Goodbye to Alumna Carole Hanna McCann
9/20/2011
University of St. Thomas alumna Carole Hanna McCann died on Saturday, September 17, after a long struggle with cancer. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated for her at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, at the St. Thomas High School Auditorium, 4500 Memorial Drive.

McCann earned a bachelor’s degree from UST in 1976 and studied in the Master in Liberal Arts program. She was named the recipient of the Vincent J. Guinan Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009. She is survived by her brother, Father Jack Hanna, CSB, a retired UST Spanish professor and teacher at St. Thomas High School.

As a writer, director, choreographer and educator, McCann was a beloved figure in the Houston theater community, teaching the arts for more than 40 years and spending more than two decades at Theatre Under the Stars. McCann also taught the art of song and dance to children in Iraq through the Houston-based nonprofit organization called American Voices, in collaboration with the U.S. State Department and the Iraqi Ministry of Culture.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Incarnate Word Academy, 609 Crawford, Houston, TX 77002.
