Lady Celts On a Roll, Capture Third Straight Win

Amber Arceneaux-FrancisThe UST Women’s Basketball team improved to 3-3 on the season by defeating the University of the Southwest Lady Mustangs 97-78 on Nov. 26 in Hobbs, New Mexico.

“This was a good win for a number of reasons,” Head Coach Mike Ricks said. “It is our first road win in program history, our first win in the Red River Athletic Conference, and our third win in a row.”

The Lady Celts shot the ball well for 40 minutes and continued their recent trend of red-hot three point shooting, finishing the game at just under 63 percent from beyond the arc. Leading the way was freshman Emily Sebo, who connected on 3 of her 4 attempts, with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Gaby Guzman also chipped in behind the arc, making 2 of her 3 attempts, for 10 points and 2 steals.

“Anytime we shoot it well from three, it gives us opportunities to get the ball inside,” Ricks said.

Not only did the Lady Celts score from the perimeter, but they dominated inside as well. Junior Amber Arceneaux-Francis led the physical Lady Celts frontcourt with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while junior Aujanee Armstrong continued her solid play with 17 points and 3 rebounds. Freshman Madeline Ali  earned 11 points, and freshman Shelia Onyekwere scored 8 points, providing a much needed lift off the bench for the Lady Celts. For the game, the team shot an incredible 65 percent while holding the Lady Mustangs to 34 percent shooting from the field.

“We really looked very comfortable offensively,” Ricks said. “Our shot selection was great. A lot of different individuals had great shooting performances.”

The Lady Celts return home looking to continue their winning ways on Dec. 1, when they take on Huston-Tillotson University in Jerabeck Gym. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
