Sarah Houser Wins Book Award
1/11/2013
Photo: Sarah Houser HonoredThe Society for the Study of American Women Writers honored Dr. Sarah Houser at its triennial international conference in Denver, Colo., on Oct. 11-13.

Houser, a visiting instructor in the Political Science Department at the University of St. Thomas, received the 2012 Edition Award for the book “Reminiscences and Traditions of Boston by Hannah Mather Crocker,” co-edited with Dr. Eileen Hunt Botting of the University of Notre Dame.

Crocker, a leading female writer and women’s rights advocate in the early 19th century, was the granddaughter of Cotton Mather, a socially and politically influential New England Puritan minister. The book was published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society in 2011. Houser discovered Crocker’s handwritten manuscript in the archives of the Genealogical Society in 2002, while conducting research for a paper she co-authored with Botting.

According to the book’s description, Crocker's early 19th-century “Reminiscences” presents a unique history of Boston and its surroundings from the 1620s to the 1820s. Crocker chronicles everything from Puritan law, colonial and provincial history, interactions with the British, French and Native Americans, the establishment of Boston churches, and Boston's economic growth, paying special attention to women's work and culture. This book also presents Crocker's treasury of poetry, including a poem by Phillis Wheatley dedicated to Hannah, and a comical recipe for chowder.

The Society’s award recognizes excellence in the recovery of American women writers.
