| Women’s Basketball Defeats Bacone |
The UST Women’s Basketball team continued their stretch of solid play by defeating the Bacone College Warriors 65-62 on Dec. 14 at the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center. With the win, the Celts improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in Red River Conference play.
“Our team showed an ability to persevere tonight,” Head Coach Mike Ricks said. “We battled a tough opponent in a close game and made plays when we needed to make plays. I was very impressed with our poise and focus down the stretch.”
Junior post Amber Arceneaux-Francis remained a force in the paint for the Lady Celts and finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, good for her fourth straight double-double.
“Amber has really started coming into her own over the last six games,” Ricks said. “She has been scoring and rebounding consistently. I still think she is just scratching the surface of her potential. I’m excited to see what she will accomplish as we progress through the season.”
Sophomore Gaby Guzman (10 points) and freshmen Emily Sebo (10 points, 5 rebounds) help counter the late push by Bacone with timely baskets in crunch time.
However, the Lady Celts won the game on the defensive end by pressuring the Lady Warriors into 22 turnovers. Junior Hershiira “Shorty” Boone-Rodgers (14 points, 6 assists) led the charge defensively with 4 steals and provided much needed energy late in the game.
“We showed several different schemes defensively,” Ricks said. “I think it kind of disrupted their flow on the offensive end. Shorty was a big reason why we were successful tonight.”
The Lady Celts look to continue their winning ways when they take on Texas Wesleyan this Saturday, Dec. 17 at Jerabeck Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
