Res Life 2013-2014: Battling Boredom 1 Event at a Time

Every year, the University of St. Thomas Office of Residence Life hires a group of diverse and energetic upperclassmen to form the Residence Life staff for the new school year. No two Res Life teams are alike, and this year, UST welcomes a combination of sophomores, juniors and seniors to become part of the 2013-2014 Residence Life Staff.

The Residence Life staff creates fun and enjoyable experiences for new freshmen, transfer students and returning residents in Guinan and Young halls. With monthly hall events, weekly programs and daily interactions, the 20-person team goes above and beyond to ensure that all residents feel secure, independent, respected and at home.

Marquis Gatewood, Director of Residence Life and Conference Housing

At the top of the command center is Marquis Gatewood, Director of Residence Life and Conference Housing. Formerly the assistant director of residence life, Gatewood recently accepted the director position after a challenging summer of being short-staffed.

“Within a matter of weeks, our department went from a team of three to a team of me,” Gatewood said. “Even though the transition was a stressful, my amazing student leaders and workers helped me balance and manage our changing department.”

Gatewood, a Houston native, is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a degree in broadcast journalism. He has also earned a master’s degree in public administration from Texas Southern University and is currently studying Educational Leadership at Creighton University. Despite a hectic summer, Gatewood traveled to the Texas Hill Country for a well-deserved vacation with his family and loved ones.

Area Resident Assistants

Second in command are the Area Resident Assistants. ARAs are responsible for managing larger residential areas. They mentor sophomore advisors, plan Wonderful Wednesdays and plan and execute staff training.

Amber Ali is a junior political science major. Ali chose UST because it was the ideal environment for her to get attention from her professors and feel like she was with her family. Ali went kayaking in Austin this summer and would love to one day practice law during the week and medicine during the weekend.

Amanda Bohl, a junior psychology and theology double major, joined Residence Life to get involved and meet new people. Originally from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Bohl dislikes cheese and would love to be a paid traveler one day.

Joshua Hawkins is graduate student seeking to earn an MBA in Finance. A Houston native, Hawkins hopes to one day be the Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Federal Reserve. The most exciting thing he did this summer was attend his best friend’s wedding as his best man.
