Education Students Attend Teaching Conference

Six University of St. Thomas education students formed the inaugural group that represented the School of Education at the Consortium of State Educators for Texas Teacher Education conference in San Antonio. Educators and students from schools all over Texas attended the conference from Oct. 20-22.

The conference, Forging the Future, aims to provide tools and resources for current teachers, and it features the Emerging Scholar Track, an opportunity for future educators to learn as well.

Dr. Ana-Lisa Gonzalez, assistant professor of education and director of reading and Catholic education, along with Dr. Randy Soffer, assistant professor of education and director of field experience served as faculty sponsors. Dr. Rick Krustchinsky, associate dean of undergraduate education, said the students were an outstanding representation of the service-learning and study abroad initiatives that the School of Education has to offer.

“The students were well-received and well-reviewed by the conference participants making this a great inaugural year for the student’s participation in the conference,” Krustchinsky said.

UST students participated in the Emerging Scholars Track, which allowed them to attend a keynote address, share their research on study abroad and attend special session addressing technology integration in the classroom and navigating the first three years of teaching.

Cristina Villagomez, senior education major, participated in an Ireland study abroad with the School of Education in July and found it valuable to be able to share her experience at the conference with people who were very curious about the different culture.

“I look forward to teaching any grade level and will use what I learned from the conference in my classroom by allowing the children to share their personal experiences with their peers,” Villagomez said.

The students enjoyed the conference and found it to be a fruitful experience as they begin their careers as educators.
