3/12/2014

Dr. Malcolm Solomon, associate professor of music at the University of St. Thomas, is a composer featured in the showcase, “Honoring the African American Artist and Composer” on Friday, Feb. 21. This event was presented by The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

“I felt pleased that people enjoyed my music at the “Honoring” event on Friday,” Solomon said. His songs “Still Here” and “Silhouette” were also performed at the African American Art Song Alliance in February 2012.

Solomon, a UST alumnus, is a composer, a writer, a director and an independent filmmaker. He earned a doctoral degree in composition from Rice University. In addition to composing and filmmaking, he is a prolific writer and has written more than a dozen screenplays that range in genre from comedy and romantic comedy to horror and drama.

Solomon started entering festivals in 1997 and won his first award in 1999. He wrote the music and lyrics, edited, produced, and directed the music video of “X-Man,” which has been selected by the Toronto Film Festival in 2012. His most recent screenplay, Raped, won third place in the Hollywood Black Film Festival and was a semi-finalist in the Urban Mediamakers Film Festival.
