Volleyball is 2-1 in Conference Play

Graphic: 14_Brittany WeilerThe University of St. Thomas women's volleyball team opened its Red River Athletic Conference play with a full weekend against Texas College, Jarvis Christian College and Wiley College. The Celts came out on top garnering a 2-1 record.

The team was solid with a 3-0 sweep at Texas College on Sept. 21.The Celts captured 25-12, 25-9 and 25-19 victories over the Steers and improved to 10-7 on the season. Senior Stephanie Biediger led the Celts offensively with 20 kills, and senior Brittany Weiler finished with a team-high of 29 assists.

The Celts then took the court on the morning of Sept. 22 against Jarvis Christian College gaining its second conference win on the weekend 3-0 with sets 25-16, 25-19 and 25-20. Biediger had another impressive match with 15 kills, seven digs and three service aces. She hit .444 for the match with just three errors on 27 attempts. Kirsten Kubicek added nine kills, Kylah Dias tallied five kills and Kelsey Balderamos and Reagan Creely each had three kills.

In the final afternoon matchup of the weekend, the Celts took on Wiley College and came up short losing 3-0. The offense was again led by Biediger with 13 kills. Kubicek had 12 kills and both Creely and Dias each tallied five. Weiler had 31 assists and five digs. Shirley Paul led the defensive effort with 16 digs.

“I felt like we played really hard this weekend,” said Head Coach Kallie Noble. “Against Wiley, we just had a difficult time putting the ball away and staying disciplined on defense.”
