| UST Selects Mardi Gras King and Queen |
Selected as exemplary models of the University’s mission to educate leaders of faith and character, UST students Robert Murillo and Steffani Rush will reign as this year’s Mardi Gras King and Queen at the 2011 Mardi Gras Gala “Jazz it Up,” on Tuesday, March 8.
In their role as the “royal couple,” Murillo and Rush will carry on the time-honored tradition, and have the opportunity to express their gratitude for scholarship contributions on behalf of the student body.
Robert Murillo is a senior music education major from The Woodlands. He has participated in the Irish Studies program, ambitiously learning the Irish language. Murillo shares the joy of music by performing with Music Department groups including Pop Singers, Schola Cantorum, Jazz Ensemble and Irish Masses. He is also a member of the Association of Texas Professional Educators and the Bilingual Education Student Association.
He also conducts the Home-school Music Program. Outside St. Thomas, he takes his music ministry to volunteer with Rhythms of Grace at St. Mark’s Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral.
“I chose the University of St. Thomas for my undergraduate degree because the school is dedicated to the cultivation of faith and knowledge. UST has taught me discipline, strength in my faith and belief, and has shown me the necessary tools for success in my field of work and in my life. My college career would not have been possible without the generosity and assistance of donors and the administration.”
Steffani Rush is a junior general studies major and theology minor from Baytown. She transferred to UST after attending the University of Houston and Lee College. At St. Thomas, Rush is a Presidential Ambassador, and participates in Campus Ministry, Catholic Daughters and Celts for Life. She is also a member of the Association of Texas Professional Educators and the Bilingual Education Student Association.
Outside UST, Rush works as the associate youth minister and junior high and CCE teacher at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Baytown. She is a dance instructor at the Dance Center of Baytown and tutors first and second grade students at Harlem Elementary. She volunteers with the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to help with the Archdiocesan Youth Conference.
“Coming to UST has been the best choice that I have ever made,” she said. “I believe that God has led me here. This school has made me become the best version of myself, and helps me live out my Catholic faith.”
