Study St. Teresa, St. John of the Cross in Spain this Summer
The UST community will have the rare opportunity to travel to Avila, Spain, this summer to take courses at the Catholic University of Avila. This venture, scheduled for August 3-18, is the first of its kind, a pilot for similar study abroad experiences. It is specially designed to accommodate new and old friends of UST who are not currently enrolled but who would welcome being a part of this innovative program.

Two one-week non-credit courses will be offered on St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, 16th century Spanish mystics and Doctors of the Church. The courses will be taught by world-renown Carmelite scholar Rev. Kieran Kavanaugh, O.C.D. He is the translator into English of the critical edition of the collected works of these two saints. The course readings will be Teresa’s Interior Castle and John’s Dark Night.

Two UST faculty members will accompany the study group in Avila as mentors: Dr. Brooke Deely, director of the Women, Culture and Society Program at UST, who has published and lectured on Santa Teresa internationally and has taught Teresa in the WCS Program; and Dr. Terry Hall, director of the Honors Program, who is deeply versed in both these saints and includes Teresa in the Honors Program.

The total cost is $4,900, which includes travel to and from Houston, course tuition, room and board and excursions related to the lives of these two saints. The deadline to sign up is June 15.

For more information, contact Diana Garcia at or 713-525-3530 or Dr. Brooke Deely at or 713-757-2489.
