Music Preparatory School Hosts Summer Camps

Graphic: Musical NotesThe University of St. Thomas Music Preparatory School is offering six music camps for grades Pre-K through 12 this summer.

The Music Composition Camp will take palce from 9 a.m. - noon, June 4-8. Young music students are invited to the campus for four mornings of musical activities.

The Music Camp for Kids (ages 3-5) will take place June 18-22, 1pm-4pm. Our playful, creativity-boosting camp includes Gordon Music Learning Theory-based lessons, hands-on experience with piano, African drums, recorder, and xylophone, and live listening sessions with classical and multicultural performers.”

The 24th annual Houston Piano Day Camp will take place from 9 a.m. - noon, June 18-22. The camp will include group and individual piano instruction, hands-on experience with harpsichord, clavichord and organ, daily snacks, a final recital on the Steinway concert grand piano in Cullen Hall and an awards ceremony upon completion.

A Summer Guitar Camp will take place from 9 a.m. - noon, July 9-13. The week-long workshop will include instruction for all levels and styles of acoustic guitar, electric guitar and electric bass, including rock, blues, jazz, acoustic, classical and songwriting. Instruction is catered to the student’s personal style, level of experience and musical goals in a non-competitive and supportive environment.

The String Institute will take place from 9 a.m. - noon, July 16-20. A week-long workshop for string players of all ages will rehearse and perform concertos for string orchestra by the great Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi including studying manuscripts, Venetian culture and history, and Vivaldi's influence on J.S. Bach.

The Math and Music Academy will take place from 9 a.m. - noon, July 23-27. The camp will explore math concepts through the use of music. Students exposed to music-based lessons score 100 percent higher on fractions tests than those who learn in the conventional manner.
