St. Thomas Students Continue to ‘Go Green’
Photo: 2012 Recycle Mania LogoThe University of St. Thomas placed fourth in the state of Texas for the Waste Minimization category of Recyclemania 2012. Led by UST’s Environmentally Concerned Organization of Students, the University has taken steps to reduce waste and make the campus more environmentally friendly.

In 2012, St. Thomas reduced its waste more than three metric tons of CO2. It is the energy equivalent of taking two cars off the road or the energy consumption of one household.

This award is a continuation of UST’s previous success in Recyclemania. In 2008, the university ranked first among participating Texas universities and fifth in the nation in the Recyclemania contest. The following year, UST maintained its number one rank in Texas and ranked 21 in the nation.

In the 2012-2013 school year, ECOS will shift its focus to energy efficiency and has already begun planning possible lighting and appliance retrofits for campus.
