It has been more than 10 years since Evan Psencik ’09, MATS ’11, first attended the Archdiocesan Youth Conference. Now, all these years later as the associate director in the Office of Adolescent Catechesis and Evangelization in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston he is on the other side serving as the assistant conference coordinator for production. He, along with St. Thomas alumna Norma Torok ’13, have worked hard to ensure the conference grows and continues to reach more students in the archdiocese.

May 29, 2014  UST Hires Alumna as Volleyball Coach
When the University of St. Thomas began its athletics program nearly a decade ago, women’s volleyball was the first sport added. Since its introduction the program has seen its share of success and setbacks, most notably the back-to-back conference champions’ titles earned between 2008-2010. Now, alumna Keanne Burt ’10 who was captain of the squad during those formative years will lead a new generation of UST volleyball players to success, this time as a coach.

The weather was perfect as nearly 130 members and friends of the University of St. Thomas Performing Arts Society gathered under the shade of the oak trees outside Cullen Hall for the PAS Spring Showcase. The Showcase honored the highest level patron members of the Performing Arts Society and celebrated a successful 2013-2014 performance season.

The Houston Independent School District has hired more of its leaders recently from the University of St. Thomas. Last year the district hired more certified administrators from UST than any other Houston-based university, according to Rocio Saldana of the Leadership Recruitment Department at HISD.

Laraine Guida McIntyre '81 and nursing student Sarah LoefflerIn a joyful meeting of scholarship recipients and supporters, more than $400,000 in scholarships were awarded to nursing students during the University of St. Thomas Nursing Scholarship Luncheon on April 22. With about 140 people in attendance in Scanlan Room, the Scholarship Luncheon connected 52 nursing students with the benefactors who made their scholarships possible.

Pecten ScholarshipFour recipients of the Pecten Chemical Scholarship in International Studies enjoyed lunch with the scholarship’s founders, Marilyn and Don Ullrich, on May 1.  Created in 1989 with a $500 gift, the Pecten Scholarship has grown to be the largest endowed scholarship for students in the Center for International Studies.

The 11th Annual International Festival at the University of St. Thomas brought the world to UST for an evening of fun, food and cultural displays.  An estimated 700 attendees from campus and the greater community came out to enjoy a taste of the world, ranging from Brazilian samba, traditional Polish dancing, Argentine empanadas and Saudi Arabian tea with cultural displays representing more than 25 countries on April 24th.

The event is free and open to the public.

University of St. Thomas Adjunct Professor of Music Marion Russell Dickson was selected as one of seven recipients of the National Association of Teachers of Singing 2014 Emerging Leader Award. Dickson will receive a $750 grant toward her attendance of NATS 53rd National Conference to be held in Boston from July 5-9, 2014.

A new comedy play, “Funny Thing about Ghosts,” has been released recently by Sam Havens, drama professor emeritus at University of St. Thomas, where he taught playwriting and screenwriting for 44 years.

The UST students were led by the Center director, Dr. Hans Stockton, an East Asia expert and long-time Taiwan specialist who has led such delegations since 2007 as part of a course he teaches on contemporary Taiwan.
