Ginn Uses Video to Tell His UST Story
12/15/2010

Crew Ginn has found that life, like a video production, often requires many “takes” to get it right. At one time, Ginn needed a “do-over” after failing out of UST. With the support of his family and friends, and the guidance of UST faculty and staff,  he returned more determined than ever to succeed.

Ginn will graduate in December with a bachelor’s degree in communication. He credits retired theology professor Father William Kelly and Lee Holm, director of Transfer Admissions and Operations, for helping him get back on track.

“Father Kelly was a mentor to me,” Ginn said. “When I was failing my classes, he essentially grabbed me by my coat tails and yanked me out of my funk. He helped me get focused. Lee Holm encouraged me to go to Houston Community College for a semester, and then he showed me step-by-step what I needed to do to come back and get a new start at UST without losing credits.”

Ginn usually finds himself behind the camera, filming projects promoting the Pre-health Program at UST, the Rugby team, Italian Festival, Freshman Orientation and a service learning project in Mexico. But after being asked to give a presentation at the Communication Department’s career night on Nov. 18, Ginn put himself in front of the camera to narrate a retrospective video following his “Voyage through UST.”  Ginn said he was inspired by Martin Scorsese’s “Voyage to Italy,” which Ginn watched in Dr. Livia Bornigia’s Italian Cinema class. The video also shows clips of Ginn’s numerous projects at UST.

“I have a lot of love for this campus, and I would do anything for the Communications Department,” Ginn said. “I wanted to make this video to show the possibilities of what you can do with a UST communication education. It’s also been really nice to reflect, and see how my work has improved over the years. When I apply for jobs, I can see myself sending this video with my portfolio.”
