International transfer student Annamarie Dober wants to focus on green marketing to combine her love for gardens and passion for marketing. Dober is working toward a five-year  BBA/MBA with a concentration in marketing. She said marketing is an effective avenue to encourage others to go green in the United States.

Dober, a transfer student  and a dual citizen, was born in Houston, but moved to Switzerland when she was eight years old. Dober said she was inspired to consider green marketing based on her family’s garden.

“We were fortunate enough to have a backyard garden in Switzerland, so it was a little weird when I got to Houston,” Dober said. “Why go to the grocery store and buy produce when you can grow your own stuff? It’s such a big part of who I am now.”

Annamarie DoberDober began growing produce like tomatoes, cucumbers and cantaloupes. She also helps tend a garden growing produce for a local food pantry in her spare time.

Dr. John Story, associate professor of management and marketing, said Dober is exceptional at applying classroom concepts to real world experiences.

In Switzerland, Dober took business classes and was nervous about transferring credits to UST, but Associate Dean of Undergraduate Business Programs Dr. Beena George was able to make the process go smoothly.

“Dr. George was wonderful in helping me and very cool,” Dober said. “Everything at UST is so organized. I liked that St. Thomas was ready to start the transfer process quickly because I was ready to start school.”

Gardens, Business Inspire Swiss Transfer StudentBecause of her transfer to UST, Dober is learning how to link business, marketing and going green to build a career.

“Learning how to communicate in the business world in America was so important to me,” Dober said. “You have to know the cultural do’s and don’ts. Marketing can be used to do great things and I want to concentrate on helping the environment.”

The next Transfer Open House at UST is on June 23. Register online to meet with an admissions transfer counselor to discuss the process, transfer credit overview, scholarships and financial aid.
