In May 2013, merely two weeks after completing final exams, Mary Buckley, Colm Supple and Sarah Tighe, graduates from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland, packed their bags and said goodbye to their friends, family and homeland as they journeyed 4,479 miles to Houston to teach.

Seven University of St. Thomas students working on undergraduate research under the guidance of Dr. Rosie Rosell, professor of biology, were awarded first prize for their fruit fly research and presentation at the Entomological Society of America Annual Meeting held in Austin, Texas from Nov. 9 – 14. Gina Duong, Zoe Knippa, Heather Skeen-Esterheld, Cecilia Dao, Luke Hebert, Katie Fisher and Maria Ton presented their research focused on determining the lethal concentration of toluene on fruit flies and the morphological effects of toluene exposure on fly offspring.

Richard Heagy, adjunct professor at UST, started this project in his management class five years ago, as a way to apply management principles such as risk evaluation and make a difference for people needing credit in developing countries.

At the University of St. Thomas, nearly 44 percent of incoming freshman can be considered first generation students. These are students whose parents have not attained their bachelor’s degree. This is slightly lower than the national average of nearly 50 percent of today’s college students considered first generation students. Of those students who are considered first generation, only 11.6 percent attend private four-year institutions, compared to the 22.1 percent non-first-generation students.

Celts Support Pro-Life Bill in AustinAmidst the crowd of hundreds of pro-life Texans, the UST Celts for Life put on their pro-life gear in support of House Bill 2, otherwise known as the Texas Infant Pain Capable Act. The bill, which passed the Texas House of Representatives on July 10 with a 96-49 vote, places higher restrictions on abortion clinics in Texas, bans abortions after 20 weeks and threatens to close 37 out of the 42 clinics in Texas that do not meet the new standards.
