Ignacio CallesAnti-social, rebel biker Ignacio Calles first rode onto the University of St. Thomas campus in 2012 sporting long hair and wearing his then-preferred torn jeans and boots.  The young man who stormed out of an abusive home at the age of 14, choosing to drop out of school and live as a teenage runaway for three years, had defied life’s odds through sheer will and a remarkable, natural intelligence. He rides out this May as a graduate on his way to medical school.

On Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Roy Nlemba, a farmer with Plant It Forward, sells the produce he grows in UST’s urban garden at a farm stand across the street from Guinan Hall, 1303 Sul Ross.

Bible Verse and DNAFreshman Mélanie Guirette will become the first UST student to declare a joint major in biology and theology, a new program of study the University will begin offering in fall 2014. Theology chair Christopher Evans said the new joint major is a great option for Catholic undergraduates who are looking to synthesize faith and science in the classroom.

2013 UST Graduate with DiplomaThe University of St. Thomas will celebrate 1,013 graduates with a Commencement Ceremony at 10 a.m. on May 17, 2014 at Reliant Arena, located at 1 Reliant Park. This year, the University will require tickets for all guests, to help accommodate the increased number of guests expected.

A “Prince of the Church” and archbishop of Galveston Houston, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, was the honoree during the 64th Annual Mardi Gras Gala, helping to raise more than $850,000 for scholarships at the University of St. Thomas. More than 400 donors, alumni and friends celebrated Fat Tuesday on March 4 at the River Oaks Country Club.

Feb 26, 2014  Accreditation Team Gives Positive Nod to Nursing
UST nursing students with professor and mannekinThe University of St. Thomas School of Nursing in Houston is one step closer to national accreditation. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, or CCNE, is a prestigious accrediting body for schools that offer baccalaureate and graduate programs in nursing. 

The three-person CCNE site-visit team visited St. Thomas from Feb. 19-21 to study the school’s achievement of the four required CCNE standards, and in their view, the School of Nursing met all four standards, with no compliance concerns.

Jacqueline HessJacqueline Hess felt the full force of adrenaline’s mind-blocking, sweaty, heart-racing effects after her first experience working in a military medical trauma setting.  She was hooked. After an eight-year stint as a U.S. Air Force combat medic, Hess is now a pre-nursing student at the University of St. Thomas, pursuing her goal to be a trauma nurse.

Kendall NiemannIn the male-dominated field of engineering, it can be difficult for women to succeed, but last year, all four graduates of the University of St. Thomas cooperative engineering program were women, and three of them were Hispanic.

UST has cooperative agreements with Texas A&M University, University of Houston, University of Notre Dame and newly-approved The Catholic University of America.

Dr. Mauro FerrariMedical research and prayer “share many fundamental characteristics,” according to Mauro Ferrari, president, CEO, and distinguished endowed chair of Houston Methodist Research Institute, who will deliver the University of St. Thomas’ annual Archbishop J. Michael Miller Lecture on Feb. 20.

Ferrari’s lecture, "Five Prayers: A Testimonial on Faith and Science,” will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Cullen Hall on the University campus at 4001 Mt. Vernon St.

The conference, titled “Service-Learning Across the Globe: From Local to Transnational,” was aimed at enhancing global participation through both theoretical and applied service learning in higher education.

Sindelar Weaves Foreign Service into Middle East ClassWhile teaching a survey class on the Middle East and North Africa, Richard Sindelar can explain the enormity of Tahrir Square during talks of the Arab Spring in Egypt. He can lend his experience with settlements to a discussion of the Arab Israeli settlements. He has firsthand knowledge because Sindelar was a United States foreign service officer who spent almost half his career covering the Middle East.

If you are looking for Marianne Ivany, it is best to look towards the stage. Ivany, the University of St. Thomas’ first lady, has been involved in the arts, theater, singing, music and writing since a young age. More recently however, she has been using her passion for the arts to promote the Performing Arts Society and to raise scholarship money for students in the music and theater departments at the University of St. Thomas.

To meet with a nation’s president is a great honor. This is an honor 14 students from the University of St. Thomas Center for International Studies experienced when they met with Taiwan's president, Mr. Ma Ying-jeou on Jan. 9 in recognition of the successful educational and cultural exchanges between UST and Taiwan. The UST students were led by the Center director, Dr. Hans Stockton, an East Asia expert and long-time Taiwan specialist who has led such delegations since 2007 as part of a course he teaches on contemporary Taiwan.

For Anthony Calleo, a 2003 philosophy and theology graduate, the road to realizing his childhood dream of opening a pizza joint has had many twists and turns. Calleo, a whippet-thin thirtysomething who does not hesitate to speak his mind, has pursued three careers since graduating from the University of St. Thomas.
