Marty Thompson Named Among Houstonís Top Leaders Under 40

University of St. Thomas alumna Marty Thompson believes character counts. If you make a commitment, you better deliver.

A philosophy she says was reinforced by her faith-based education at UST, Thompson has come to value character in personal, professional and civic life. And her peers have taken notice.

Thompson has been named to the Houston Business Journal’s distinguished 40 Under 40 list. The list identifies 40 young, respected Houstonian business leaders who excel in their industries and show dynamic leadership in their communities. Honorees will be recognized at an awards ceremony on May 20 at the House of Blues.

Thompson graduated from UST in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in international studies, and went on to earn a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 2002. She has practiced as a business litigation attorney at Haynes and Boone LLP since 2002.

Thompson’s community leadership roles include serving on the Houston Downtown Alliance board and the NCAA Texas Bowl hospitality committee. For five years, she has volunteered to choreograph the Houston Bar Association’s Night Court, an annual all-attorney musical comedy that raises money to support HBA’s charitable arm, the Houston Bar Foundation. Thompson said six UST alumni are currently participating in this year’s production of Night Court.

“I love Houston; I was born and raised here, and I have seen the city grow to become a beacon for other cities. Even in bad economic times we are still growing,” Thompson said. “There are so many incredible leaders here in Houston, and to be recognized as a leader in the Houston community is quite an honor.”

As a UST student, Thompson was the president of the Student Association and helped to found the student volleyball club that later became the varsity Women’s Volleyball program. Thompson served on the UST Alumni Association board of directors from 2003 to 2009. She organized the first Alumni Association Garage Sale, raising more than $3,000 and served as emcee for the Alumni Association Fashion Show in 2005. As president of the UST International Studies Alumni Association, she raised money for the Ann Q. Tiller Memorial Scholarship in International Studies.

“UST instilled in me the drive to want to be a good corporate citizen, whether I am volunteering at soup kitchens or on the Alumni Association board. I truly believe St Thomas upholds its slogan to educate leaders of faith and character. My faith life is very important to me, and I am so thankful to St. Thomas for helping me grow in my faith by sharing the teachings of the Church. I am so grateful that I had such incredible examples of people living out their faith in the faculty and staff.

“Seeing this university produce outstanding graduates only helps our city be better. I love Houston and I love St. Thomas, and I am happy to help the small community of St. Thomas continue to make a positive impact on the Houston community at large.”

Despite her busy schedule, Thompson said her many commitments are so enjoyable, it never feels like a balancing act.

“It’s easy to stay involved and to make time for things I really care about,” she said.  “For me, it never feels like a task. After you graduate, it can be hard to meet new people. Volunteering enables you to meet people who share your interests, enriches your life and helps you grow as a person. It would be your loss not to get involved in your community; you would be missing out.”
