UST Students Rope Rodeo Scholarships

UST Students Rope Rodeo ScholarshipsSeveral University of St. Thomas students are proud recipients of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarships for the 2012-2013 year.

Sophomore Daisy Herrera-Vazquez, a pre-med major and finance minor, said the Rodeo scholarship helped her by giving her the opportunity to attend UST without having a huge financial strain.

“Receiving this scholarship meant that all of my hard work and sacrifices that I made in high school have paid off,” she said. “When I first found out that I was chosen, my parents were very proud.”

Herrera-Vazquez wanted to stay close to her family and wanted a liberal arts education. She said the St. Thomas curriculum incorporates the Catholic intellectual tradition in education and, by offering her a great financial aid package, her choice was easy.

Lynda McKendree, dean of Scholarships and Financial Aid, said scholarships such as the Houston Livestock and Rodeo are critical to the success of our students.

“They assist students in paying for their college costs, but also help students stay on track with their studies,” she said. “Because the Livestock scholarships have several requirements, and are renewable, students are more cognizant of how important it is to keep up their grades, and apply for financial aid in a timely manner.”

A graduate of DeBakey High School for Health Professions, Herrera-Vazquez is interested in psychiatry. She became interested in the health field during the last two years of high school, when she was able to volunteer at Ben Taub General Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital and the Veteran’s Hospital to shadow physicians. At UST, she is in the Pre-Health Professions Society at UST, which allows her to continue similar volunteer opportunities.

At UST, Herrera-Vazquez enjoys the many cultural advantages of the University.

“Every year I enjoy the International Festival that takes place in UST,” she said. “It is the one day that I get to taste different cultural food and learn about other people’s culture. Also, UST is located in the Museum District, so whenever I am feeling overwhelmed, I usually run outside to relax.”

With the Rodeo in town, UST students are in a great location to take full advantage of what Houston has to offer.

Other Rodeo scholarship recipients include Sally Acebo, Andrea Arroyo, Tony Do, Evangelina Gonzalez, Liliana Guevera, Christine Pham, Hoang Tran, Jennifer Trevino and Velckis Gonzalez.

McKendree, on behalf of the University, expresses appreciation for what Rodeo scholarships give to the students.

“The Rodeo continues their focus on supporting first generation, needy students, and we are always excited when we are notified of which UST students are Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show recipients,” McKendree said.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Show is committed to awarding more than $12 million in student scholarships in 2013.
