Dedication to teaching and the cause of truth, wherever it is discovered, is the Basilians’ hallmark and legacy. While UST has grown to become a mid-size comprehensive university, it remains profoundly committed to offering a Catholic, liberal arts education in the Basilian tradition.
We believe that the more faithful we are to our identity and mission, the more appealing we will be to a growing number of students. In order to gain recognition as a great Catholic university, we must project externally a focused sense of who we are. We must communicate our distinctive traits forcefully and repeatedly, and provide experiences that convey our identity and dedication to the Catholic ideals and principles of higher education.
Thanks to the success of the capital campaign that exceeds expectations with $67 million raised, the University has made vast improvements in its appearance. Form-over-function arguments aside, it is simply not enough to be an excellent university. We must look like the institution that we seek to become. Malloy Hall, completed in 2001, provides much needed, state-of-the-art classrooms. The new Guinan Hall, one of the finest residence halls in the United States, is a favorite among students; we started fall 2006 with an occupancy rate of 99.6. The Moran Center provides convenient, inexpensive parking, a bookstore, the Labyrinth Lounge and campus security. The award-winning Campus Life Mall is more than a pleasant sight. Students welcome it as a place to congregate, socialize, study and reflect in the various gardens. The beautification of the campus enhances the wonderful transformation of our neighborhood campus into a true academic village in the heart of Houston.
As we approach the pinnacle of our capital vision, it is gratifying to see our future begin to take form. We will continue to grow, to promote academic excellence, and to enhance our service to our community as we take our place among the best universities in the world.
