Academic Advising

Back to Academics

Roberto Gonzalez and Natasha Alvarez in Academic AdvisingAcademic Advising is the process of discussing majors, selecting classes and building a roadmap for academic success that occurs between an advisor and a student.

The Academic Advising Center at the University of St. Thomas provides students with access to a professional team of advisors that specialize in helping students identify and achieve their academic goals. Students should meet with an academic advisor at least once a semester and more regularly if they are having difficulty. Advisors may assist students with selecting or changing majors, degree planning, course scheduling and building plans for overall academic success.

Students and advisors are encouraged to consider the following when developing a strategic plan for achieving excellence:

  • Exploration of intellectual, moral and spiritual values
  • Exploration of life goals
  • Exploration of career goals
  • Selection of a major or program of study
  • Selection of courses
  • Scheduling of courses

Faculty Advisors

Every incoming student is assigned an academic advisor. Freshmen will be teamed with an academic advisor who will help them develop an academic plan for the current and coming years at the University. Once a student declares a major (no sooner than the end of freshman year), they will be assigned a faculty advisor in the department of the chosen major.
