Taiwan Studies Conference Enjoys Community Support
Scholars from across the United States and Taiwan presented research at the first Taiwan Studies Conference of the Taiwan & East Asia Studies Program on April 22, 2017.  The conference and keynote banquet was sponsored by a Taiwan Studies Grant from the Ministry of Education of Taiwan and subvention by Frank Liang, President of the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston.

University of St. Thomas Center for International Studies Receives Prestigious Taiwan Studies Grant
The Center for International Studies has received a three-year, $170,000 grant from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education to support ongoing and future expansion of Taiwan Studies at the University of St. Thomas.

With media reporting on the stress between the United States and Russia’s relationship occurring more frequently, the next generation of policy makers and diplomats will need to develop a strong understanding of what drives Russia politically and economically, while maintaining strong ties with Russian representatives. 

Houston Mayor Awards UST International Initiatives
City of Houston Mayor Annise Parker awarded the University of St. Thomas $5,000 for excellence in international education. The award came from proceeds raised at the 2015 Houston Consular Ball.

Strategic Areas Certificate Sees Success in Debut Year
The inaugural year of the Strategic Areas Certificate Program has realized early success for UST students and the University. The effort to promote East Asia studies and languages has tripled enrollment in Chinese and Japanese language courses over the prior 2013-15 academic year.

Vo takes first place at Chinese Speech Competition
Claudia Lopez, Rebecca Skaff and Stephanie Tam Vo competed in the 22nd annual Global Federation of Chinese Business Woman Chinese Speech Contest on April 18.

Ambassador Pickering Delivers 2015 Distinguished Diplomat Lecture
Six-time U.S.  Ambassador and former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Pickering will deliver the 2015 Distinguished Diplomat Lecture titled, “Challenges Facing U.S. Foreign Policy to 2016.”

Stanfill Benefit Concert Raises Funds for SEP
Stanfill Benefit ConcertThe SEP members raised $5,000 for the Austin Stanfill Traveling Fund at a benefit concert on Feb. 13 in memory of former SEP student executive board president Austin Stanfill ‘12. After Stanfill’s death in 2013, his family and the University of St. Thomas created this fund to sponsor other SEP members’ projects around the world.

Ambassador Witnesses to Vaticanís Global Diplomacy
Ambassador Francis RooneyAmbassador Francis Rooney, who was U.S. ambassador to the Holy See from 2005 to 2008, discussed his recent book, “The Global Vatican” on Feb. 11, at a dinner hosted by the Center for International Studies Distinguished Diplomat Program.  During his time at the Holy See, the Ambassador witnessed the quiet yet crucial diplomacy pursued by the pope through the Vatican’s extensive global diplomatic network.
