International Studies is an interdisciplinary approach to identifying and understanding the ways that the human family is interconnected. International Studies majors explore the implications of those connections and analyze what they mean in our global society. Rooted in the liberal arts curriculum, this major systematically combines courses from several fields taught by a faculty versed in a variety of disciplines.

Course work, research, internships and study abroad programs are directed toward two major goals:

  • Preparing students for employment or postgraduate studies in law, business or the social sciences; and
  • Developing students’ in-depth understanding of and respect for the variety of cultural, political, economic, philosophical and social conditions within the human family.

Academic studies of commercial, political and social factors challenge students to analyze the intersection of global economic and technological change with varied heritages of history, tradition and institutionalized response. Examination of these encounters leads to a well–developed awareness of serious contemporary problems that affect human dignity, justice, economic development, governance, peace, security, dispute resolution and resource allocation.

The program requires a high degree of language acquisition, emphasizes superior ability in written expression and promotes critical analysis and independent inquiry through research.
