Irish balladeer duo The Celtic Sons – Danny O’Flaherty and Noel Nash – share their heritage through music, song, dance and storytelling at the sixth annual Celtic Christmas Concert. The concert will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8, 2013 at the University of St. Thomas Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum Blvd.

People of Catholic, Methodist and other faiths collaborated to promote peace and reconciliation, the mission of the University of St. Thomas William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies, during its annual Irish Gala on Nov. 22 at The Houstonian Hotel. Celebrating the Center’s 10th anniversary, the gala honored Rev. and Mrs. Harold Good, members of the international community from Belfast, Northern Ireland, who have been instrumental in building and maintaining peace around the world. Rev. Good is a former president of the Methodist Church in Ireland.

The Houston School of Irish Music, in collaboration with the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies at the University of St. Thomas, is bringing traditional Irish folksongs, ballads and harp tunes to the youth of Houston.

Nearly 20 years ago the Provisional Irish Republican Army signed a ceasefire agreement, turning the tide in a history marked with conflict and violence. Since then, Northern Ireland has made great strides in establishing peace and bringing reconciliation in the divided island of Ireland.

This summer, 12 students will venture across the Atlantic Ocean to study contemporary Ireland and the peace process in Northern Ireland with Lori Gallagher, J.D., director of the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies.

Tom Horan ‘66 said he is to St. Patrick’s Day what Santa Claus is to Christmas. Horan, a jolly man with an infectious, hardy laugh, will be marching in his 50th and final St. Patrick’s Day Parade with the Erin Go Braugh Society of America contingent at noon on March 16 in downtown Houston.

People across the world will dress in green and don their shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day. The William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day like the Irish at 10:30 a.m. on March 15. The brunch is free to UST faculty, staff and students, as well as all religious and all clergy in the community.

The William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies has much to celebrate at its Tenth Anniversary Open House. During an all-day event from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 23, the Center, located at 4206 Yoakum Blvd., is open to the public to take a tour and celebrate its 10th year as a Center for Excellence at the University of St. Thomas.

The University of St. Thomas William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies, rated among the top 10 Irish Studies programs in the country, celebrated the contributions of well-known members of the Houston Irish and Irish American communities at its annual Irish Gala held Nov. 9 at The Houstonian Hotel. The honorees were recognized for their contributions to the Center’s mission of preserving Irish heritage and culture.
