Honors Program Information

Dr. Terry Hall and students at CASE conferenceThe Honors Program embodies the goals of a Catholic liberal arts education at the University of St. Thomas and fosters the realization of each of its objectives. The Honors Program offers students an experience that integrates, at the most profound level, the intellectual, cultural and spiritual foundations of a liberal arts education.

Honors Program Curriculum

By studying the classic texts of Western civilization, Honors students encounter the ideas and institutions that have formed Western culture. In addition, Honors courses aim to integrate the study of these great ideas with the ways one lives.

The Honors Program consists of seven courses spread over four years.  In the freshman and sophomore years, Honors students take a sequence of four interdisciplinary, team-taught seminars centered on a close reading of Great Books. After this foundation, in the junior and senior years students engage in a community service project, independent research in one’s major discipline and collaborative research as a class on a contemporary issue confronting American culture.

In the fall semester of their junior year, four students are chosen to attend the annual conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council.

Honors Program Requirements

Students must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 (“B” standing) in their Honors courses and an overall GPA of 3.0 in their other non-Honors courses in order to continue in the program. In order to graduate with an Honors designation on the degree, a student must successfully complete all seven courses in the Honors curriculum.
