Dr. Larios-Sanz Loves Biology

Dr. Maia Larios-Sanz says general biology is one of her favorite classes to teach. In this class, students build on their critical thinking skills as they are exposed to the scientific method and learn to appreciate life and its many intricate details and processes. In the unit profiled in this article, students are introduced to the many sub-compartments of animal and plant cells. Dr. Larios-Sanz Explains Intricate Details of Life.

The Biology Department at the University of St. Thomas includes degrees in biology and bioinformatics. The biology program teaches students the principles governing the structure and function of biological systems at every level from molecules to the biosphere. The program places special emphasis on ecology and evolution as the context in which to understand these principles. Students will graduate prepared for graduate and professional schools and for entry-level biologist positions.

Bioinformatics is a fast-growing and newly emerged field in the life sciences that utilizes math and computer science applications to analyze and store the vast amounts of information produced from the various genome and proteome projects. A bioinformatics major includes concentrations in biology, mathematics and computer science. Graduates will be prepared to enter professional or graduate school in bioinformatics or for entry-level positions in biotechnology firms, genome projects or the pharmaceutical industry.
