Biology Major

The Biology Department at the University of St. Thomas included degrees in biology, cell and molecular biology and bioinformatics. The biology program teaches students the principles governing the structure and function of biological systems at every level from molecules to the biosphere. The program places special emphasis on ecology and evolution as the context in which to understand these principles. Students will graduate prepared for graduate and professional schools and for entry-level biologist positions.

The Cell and Molecular Biology program is specifically designed to prepare students for cellular, molecular or genetics-based graduate studies. Possible careers include research in DNA replications and repairs systems, cell reproduction and genomes, among other career options. Students will be trained to critically evaluate scientific data, perform sound experiments and effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.

Bioinformatics is a fast-growing and newly emerged field in the life sciences that utilizes math and computer science applications to analyze and store the vast amounts of information produced from the various genome and proteome projects. A bioinformatics major includes concentrations in biology, mathematics and computer science. Graduates will be prepared to enter professional or graduate school in bioinformatics or for entry-level positions in biotechnology firms, genome projects or the pharmaceutical industry.
