Students seeking Initial Certification as a classroom teacher in the Bachelor’s program should work closely with their+ advisor to take the required courses. Before entering the classroom, students will
- Receive admission to Student Teaching, and
- Pass Content TExES Exam
Students seeking post baccalaureate certification should review the requirements and work closely with the advisor to take the required courses. Before entering the classroom students will
- Pass the Pre-admission Content Test
- Complete 6-credit hours of the Transition to Teaching courses,
- Complete 30 hours of observation, and
- Find a teaching position in a Texas Education Agency approved, public, private or charter school
Students with a probationary certificate are required to be enrolled in EDUC 5191 each spring and fall semester while teaching until the Standard certificate is issued; therefore more than two semesters may be necessary. Students also have the option of completing 6-credit hours of clinical teaching instead of teaching on a Probationary certificate.
As required by Title II of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, the Secretary of Education has prepared an annual report for Congress and the public on the preparation of teachers. This report provides a tool to compare University of St. Thomas Initial Teacher Preparation program to other programs in the state and nation.

Educational Diagnostician, Principal, Reading Specialist, or School Counselor Certificate
- Valid classroom teaching certificate on file.
- Successfully complete all coursework, including practicum, and have grades posted to the transcript.
- Successfully pass the TExES exam.
- Master’s degree posted on transcript. (UST Master’s of Education degrees are posted approximately one month after graduation. If the master’s degree is from an external institution an official transcript must be on file.)
- Complete two creditable years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher and provide a service record to document the experience. This official service record must show the days worked per year. It may be a copy. Allow your district up to one month to process this request. FAX to 713.525.3871, attention Certification Officer.

Note: (School Counselors are not required to hold a valid teaching certificate but must complete two years creditable teaching in a TEA approved public, private or charter school as the teacher of record.)

To take the TExES Exam
- Submit the TExES Eligibility Form and the FERPA .
- Receive approval from the program director to take the exam.
- For Principal and School Counselor, students are required to pass a practice test. Program directors may require the completion of specific courses before granting approval to test.
- Maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in the program. A 3.0 GPA is a requirement for graduation.

Review for Certification
- Complete all courses on either the degree plan or the certification plan.
- Pass the TExES Exam(s)
- Submit the Certification Information form and the FERPA Waiver. (Passing scores on the corresponding TExES exam(s) are required to submit the Certification Information form to start the review process for the requested certificate.
- Have a bachelor’s degree posted to a transcript for initial teaching certification, or have a master’s degree posted to a transcript for Educational Diagnostician, Principal, School Counselor, or Reading Specialist certification.
- Complete a minimum of two years creditable teaching experience as teacher on record for a professional certificate or a minimum of two semesters of teaching internship for initial certification.
- Document teaching with a copy of a service record as required by SBEC.
Apply to SBEC for Certificate
In order for the School of Education to complete a recommendation to the State Board of Educator Certification, candidates must complete a separate application with SBEC for the certificate. Following are directions to get you started on the process.
- On the top right corner choose "Educator Login"
- Follow SBEC’s directions to complete your application.
- The certification programs at the University of St. Thomas are University Based Programs not Alternative Program.
- Master Teacher should only be selected if you are applying for the Master Reading Teacher Certificate.
- If you are applying for a Probationary Certificate, you will choose Probationary.
- All other certificates will choose the Standard Certificate.
