Nursing Admissions

Next Start: Fall 2017

Application Deadline: June 1, 2017

Admission to the Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing is a 2-part process:

  • Step 1: apply to the University of St. Thomas Apply to UST
  • Step 2: apply to the School of Nursing* (application available online spring 2017)

*Incoming freshman will complete this step at the end of their freshman year

Both applications and all required documents must be submitted by the June 1st deadline to be considered for admission. Admission into UST does not guarantee admission into the Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing.

Transfer students may submit both applications at the same time. Students waiting on general admission should still make sure all nursing application documents are received by the June 1st deadline.

Eligibility Requirements

Students must meet the following requirements by the June 1st deadline to be considered for admission.

  • All documents received for general admission to UST
  • 3.0 overall college GPA, based on a 4.0 scale
  • Anatomy and Physiology I and II complete
  • At least 5 other pre-requisites complete. See Transfer Nursing Guide.

NO entrance exam required for admission!

Admission Considerations

Students are admitted to the School of Nursing by a Nursing Admissions Committee. The committee reviews all eligible applicants after the June 1st deadline and will offer decisions no later than July 15th

In addition to eligibility requirements, the Nursing Admissions Committee considers a number of other factors for potential students, including, but not limited to:

  • All grades for Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Nutrition (if complete)
  • Math grades
  • Full-time vs. part-time class load
  • Patterns of repeats and/or withdraws
  • Extracurricular activities and obligations

Students admitted to the UST Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing will be subject to participation requirements established by healthcare organizations that host student clinical rotations, which include criminal background checks, CPR certification and specific immunizations. These requirements may also include verification of identity and compliance with federal immigration law.

Program Timeline

Our Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a 4-year program. Incoming freshmen will begin pre-requisites during their first year and apply to the School of Nursing at the end of their freshman year. Transfer students may be able to graduate in as little as 3 years.

Transfer students can apply with some pre-requisite and core classes in progress. See our Nursing Admissions Coordinator, Cathy Ruhnke, to maximize credit toward UST’s nursing program.

High-Performing High School Seniors

High-performing high school seniors interested in pursuing a nursing major will be reserved a space in the BSN Program upon acceptance into UST as freshmen. Criteria for this consideration include:

  • Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher, based on a 4.0 scale
  • Combined SAT math and verbal scores of 1310, 690 minimum in math (new SAT)
  • Grade of B (80%) or higher in each math and science course taken in high school

High school students with a reserved space in the Nursing Program must maintain satisfactory completion of designated nursing prerequisite courses during their freshman and sophomore years at UST. These students will meet with a Nursing Advising Counselor once a semester to monitor their progress.

Students are automatically considered for this upon general admission to the University of St. Thomas.
