The Master of Divinity (M.Div.) is a professional degree program designed to develop the academic, spiritual and pastoral skills necessary for ministerial leadership in the Church. The program is available to men preparing for ordination to the Roman Catholic priesthood.
Candidates for the Roman Catholic priesthood must complete a 126-hour program that conforms to the Program of Priestly Formation established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Students in this program must have the approval of their Bishop or religious superior. In addition diocesan seminarians must be admitted to St. Mary’s Seminary.

Thirty hours of undergraduate philosophy are required with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale and 12 hours undergraduate theology with a minimum of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
The program requires the completion of 126 hours with a minimum cumulative average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, including 104 credit hours of required courses, 12 credit hours of electives and 10 credit hours of pastoral field education.*
*Ecclesiastical authorities of candidates for sacramental ordination may specify additional requirements in academics and in pastoral field education. Students are responsible for consulting the directives of ecclesiastical superiors in such matters.
UST School of Theology does not have a language requirement to obtain the M.Div. degree; however, most dioceses require their students to become conversant in Spanish.
Transfer of Credit
Courses completed with a minimum of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale at the post-baccalaureate level at an accredited institution may be accepted toward the fulfillment of M.Div. requirements. A maximum of 62 hours may be accepted as transfer credit for the M.Div. program, provided there is a true equivalency with School of Theology course offering.
Program requirements must be completed within 10 years of initial registration.
The exit procedure for the 126-hour Master of Divinity degree is the satisfactory completion of an oral outcomes examination given in the final semester of the student’s study.
