Outside Scholarships


In addition to University scholarships and federal financial aid, UST encourages students to pursue outside scholarship opportunities. Please keep in mind that you should never have to send an application fee when applying for a scholarship.

Once awarded, outside scholarship funds are mailed to our office and posted to your student account. When you have been awarded an outside scholarship, communication with our office is important. Please have your outside scholarship donors mail the scholarship check(s) made payable to the University of St. Thomas (along with any correspondence) to:

$1,000 scholarship

You have two chances a year to enter to win a scholarship by writing an essay between 300 and 500 words on the following question: Will increased DVR use cut into TV advertising revenue?

Deadlines are June 1 and December 1 in 2013.

Abbott and Fenner Scholarship Program

Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants will be awarding up to $1,000 to the winner(s) each year.  The Scholarship Deadline is June 14, 2014.

AES Engineers

The consulting firm of AES Engineers are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character.  To be eligible, the student needs answer one of the essay questions found here.  Deadline for entry is October 6, 2014.

Executive Women International® Adult Students in Scholastic Transition Scholarship Program (ASIST)

The ASIST scholarship is available to adults facing economic, social or physical challenges who are looking to improve their situation through educational opportunities. ASIST is coordinated by each participating EWI chapter. Each chapter has its own deadline date for submitting an application, so please contact your local chapter to obtain their timeline for the application process. Applications should be submitted to the president of participating EWI chapters.

Estey & Bomberger Scholarship Contest

There is a large debate surrounding the topic of whether or not a person should receive subsidized health care in one is injured while breaking the law, so we want you to create an Prezi that tells your opinion on the subject. There is no wrong answer, we are going to judge the presentation on the execution of the argument and the creativity of your Prezi design. Go to to start creating today. Find A Law Scholarship

1) Be Enrolled in full-time studies at a college, trades, or technical school by no later than September 2014.

2) Currently reside in the United States and intend on continuing studies in the United States.

Free Country Principles

The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston

Each year, the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston awards a $1600 scholarship to a promising vocal student attending a college or university in the Houston area, or to a student from the Houston area attending a college or university elsewhere.  High school seniors entering college in the fall are also eligible.  This scholarship money is provided to the Society through a grant from the Lillian Kaiser Lewis Foundation, and is intended for a student majoring in vocal performance.  When financially able, the Society may award an additional scholarship of lesser value to a second, strongly qualified candidate.  A technical internship of $1600 is offered to students of the theater, giving them experience in the workings and production of a show. 
The Society hopes that you will take the time to look through the materials provided, and that qualified students will apply by the postmark deadline of Friday, March 7, 2014.  Funding is for the 2014-15 academic year, and monies will be paid directly to the university, half for the Fall term, and half for the Spring term.  All applicants must submit the provided application form, as well as all other required materials.  Late or incomplete applications and ineligible candidates will not be considered.  The recipient(s) will be notified by the end of April 2014.

Great Lakes STEM Scholarships

Students majoring in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) disciplines may be eligible to receive $2,500 scholarships under the new Great Lakes National Scholarship Program. Up to 750 scholarships totaling $1.875 million will be awarded to new and continuing students who qualify.

Hellenic Professional Society of Texas

Each year the Society awards scholarships to qualified undergraduate and graduate full-time students. Applicants are eligible for a scholarship if they are currently attending or have been accepted by a college or university in Texas, have shown excellent scholastic performance in their corresponding field of study and are of Hellenic heritage. The Society also accepts applications from students of non-Greek descent that have demonstrated clear, strong and sustained excellence in academic studies related to Greek letters or affairs.

The Houston Association of Hispanic Media Professionals

The Houston Association of Hispanic Media Professionals (HAHMP) will be offering more than $30,000 in scholarships to 10 Hispanic students majoring in journalism or communications.  HAHMP is inviting high school seniors, college undergraduates and first-year graduate students who are pursuing careers as print, photo, broadcast or online journalists or in public relations, to apply for HAHMP scholarships.  Applicants must plan to attend as full-time students for the entire academic year in a community college or university that is within the United States or Puerto Rico.  Applicants must reside in the Greater Houston Area.

Students must fill out an application form and include school transcripts, family income (recent W2 forms), two letters of reference, a one-page resume and an autobiographical essay.  

This year, HAHMP will award 10 scholarships of $3,500 each. The application deadline is March 1st, 2014.  Application available here.

Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund

The Talbots Scholarship Program is funded by the Talbots Charitable Foundation Inc. and was created to support those women ready to start a new chapter by pursuing a college degree later in life. Since its inception in 1997, we have awarded over $1.6 million in scholarships.

Texas Department of Transportation

The Conditional Grant Program is available to eligible students pursuing a degree in civil engineering or a department approved operational business discipline. The Conditional Grant Program will consider both Texas public and private four-year institutions.

Students accepted into the program receive up to $3,000 per semester or $6,000 per academic year, based on financial need.  Application deadline is March 1, 2014.

TruFit Good Citizen Scholarship

A total of 10, $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to U.S. residents who are 16-years of age or older and are attending or accepted to a federally accredited four-year college, university or graduate program and who have been active in community service. The scholarships will be awarded this summer for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Applicants are asked to write an essay of no more than 500 words demonstrating their good citizenship through community volunteerism and leadership. They must also provide two references that are directly connected to their community involvement. For full details, go to

The Verbal Ink Transcription Services Scholarship

Each year, the Verbal Ink Transcription Services Scholarship awards a $1,500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior or current college freshman. The scholarship will be renewable each year for up to four years, provided that the award recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA or equivalent and completes the minimum number of credit hours required to be a full-time student each academic year.

Vietnamese American Medical Association of Greater Houston

Eligible candidates must be of Vietnamese descent, currently attend school in the Greater Houston area** with an interest in pursuing medicine, and be in good standing during their 3rd or 4th year of studies at the respective institution. 

All of the following items are required for scholarship consideration:

  1. A completed VAMA-GH scholarship application form (available online at or through the VAMA-GH website
  2. A curriculum vitae
  3. An official transcript from your current institution

Applications must be submitted by March 10, 2014 for consideration.  The VAMA-GH Scholarship Committee will announce the scholarship recipients by April 1, 2014 and the winners will be invited to the Annual Gala on April 12, 2014.
