Veteran, Drama Major Overcomes Obstacles, Takes a Bow

At the age of 19, Templeton was told that she could not make it in the military, and, with the grit and determination to prove people wrong, she enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Though her military career was cut short, it offered her a way to afford college tuition. The military also gave her the training and knowledge needed to succeed in her civilian life. Read more

Veteran Student Awarded Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship

U.S. Army veteran and international studies major Venol Raymond will receive a $24,000 award over two years from the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation, whose mission is to assist severely wounded, Post-9/11 Veterans to become self-sufficient members of their communities as they transition back into civilian life. Frederick Heard isa full-time, veteran student at the University of St. Thomas, who joined the Master of Public Policy and Administration degree program and strives to use his military experience to continue to help the Houston community through volunteer work. Read more

UST Creates Veteran Friendly Environment

Currently, there are 147 veterans and dependents on Campus. Phillip Butcher, director of Transfer Admissions and Veteran Services who is an Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, said he believes veteran students should be given the highest level of services, attention and support. Read More

The University of St. Thomas welcomes all military students as important members of our community. Dr. Robert Ivany, our president and a Retired Major General in the U.S. Army, is committed to supporting veterans through a first-rate, affordable education. UST collaborates with the Veterans Administration to enable eligible veterans to attend UST with minimal tuition cost — read more about the opportunities provided by the GI Bill.

UST provides an academically rigorous but personalized approach to education with a low student-to-faculty ratio and an average class size of 16. UST offers 36 undergraduate degrees, 17 master’s degrees and 2 doctoral degree through the School of Arts & Sciences, Cameron School of Business, School of Education and Human Services and School of Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary.

Student Veterans Admissions Checklist

Step 1: Review Admissions Requirements 

Step 2: Complete the UST admissions application 

Step 3: Discuss benefits with Phillip Butcher, Director of Veteran Services

Step 4: Complete application for GI Benefits with the VA

Step 5: Submit college and military transcripts along with a resume

Step 6: Once received, submit “Certification of Eligibility” letter to the UST Registrar’s Office at the following address:
