CIS SCHOLARSHIPS
Several Center for International Studies Scholarships are available. Please see the navigation links on the left to view the details for each scholarship.
Additional scholarships that you might consider applying for are listed below. The following link provides additional scholarship resources, as well as things to consider when applying for outside scholarships. Please be advised that some have deadlines that occur on a yearly basis. It might be helpful to note the date and check their website frequently for most updated information.
OUTSIDE FOUNDATIONS AND FELLOWSHIPS
- Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program - Your application must go through Dr. Linda Pett-Conklin. She is the only person who can nominate you from UST and you must be nominated. Applications must be completed by the end of January.
- Critical Language Scholarship - This program offers intensive overseas study in the critical need foreign languages of Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi and many others. Application deadline is in November.
- American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) - This ASFA Scholarship Fund offers undergraduates financial aid scholarships and high school merit awards for Foreign Service children. Applications are available on November 1, and the submission deadline is February 6 of each year.
- Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Scholarship - This premier scholarship opportunity is awarded to Latino students who have a history of performing public service-oriented activities in their communities and who plan to continue in the future. The deadline is usually in April.
- NSEP David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships - This scholarship offers a unique opportunity for U.S. undergraduates to study abroad. NSEP awards scholarships to American students for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests. Please see website for deadline information. This Applications and detailed information on the Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are now available on www.borenawards.org. - Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University-Offers a broad range of programs, including internships, fellowships of up to $15,000, and interdisciplinary seminars. Internship programs in policy, journalism, and film offer experience and formal training. The application is available in August, and it is due December 31.
- Washington Internship Institute- Provides students with real world experience while challenging them with academic coursework. WII offers three internship programs for undergraduate and graduate students. Scholarships are also available to offset costs of tuition and housing.
- The Capital Experience- serves students of all majors who wish to investigate careers in Washington, DC.
- The Embassy and Diplomatic Scholars Program- serves students with interests in international relations including languages and business.
- Go Green!-serves students with interests in environmental action and policy.
Deadline: Summer: March 1; Fall: July 1; Spring: December 1
- Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity Ethics Essay Contest - This annual contest was created to challenge college students to contemplate ethical issues facing them in today's complex society and to analyze their own perception and thoughts on ethics. Awards of up to $5,000 are granted. Full-time juniors and seniors are eligible to apply and are required to partner with a faculty sponsor, which may be any interested professor. The deadline is December 6 and winners will be announced in March.
- Intercollegiate Studies Institute for College Students- offers the Simon Fellowship, a $40,000 unrestricted grant awarded to those graduating college seniors who have demonstrated passion, dedication, a high capacity for self-direction, and originality in pursuit of a goal that will strengthen civil society. In addition, awards of $20,000 and $10,000 are made to two other outstanding students. Examples of how recipients may use the award include: engaging directly in the civic life of their community, helping to create opportunity for others, including job creation, advancing their expertise, and/or funding the ultimate realization of their noble purpose. The ISI also offers an annual essay competition. Complete contest information can be viewed here. Essays are due in March.
- APSA Minority Fellowship Program - Applicants should be college seniors that are members of an underrepresented group. These students should be interested in pursuing a PhD in Political Science.
APSA will fund twelve fellowships. Funded APSA Fellows will receive a $4,000 fellowship disbursed in two $2,000 payments at the end of each academic year provided that the student remains in good academic standing. APSA will also send letters of support, to designated graduate programs, on behalf of those students who are awarded fellowships. Awards are based on students' course work, GPA, personal statement, extracurricular activities, resume GRE scores, and recommendations from faculty.
The MFP is designed primarily for minority students applying to enter a doctoral program in Political Science. Applicants must be US citizens who are members of one of the following racial/ethnic minority groups: African Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, Latinos/as, and Native Americans (federal and state recognized tribes). Applications and additional eligibility criteria can be accessed online at: http://www.apsanet.org/mfp/.
All application materials for the Minority Fellows Program must be postmarked and mailed to APSA by early October each year.
- The Robertson Foundation for Government Graduate Fellowship Opportunity
This scholarship is designed to encourage college graduates to pursue federal government careers in national security, foreign policy and international development. Recipients must agree to complete at least three years of service with a federal agency within five years of graduation. Eight students will be selected and must pursue graduate studies at one of the foundation's partner universities. Scholarship recipients may consider careers with the State Department, Foreign Service, U.S. Agency for International Development, congressional committees, intelligence agencies and international development programs at other Cabinet departments.

- Davies-Jackson Scholarship
The Davies- Jackson Scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for a motivated student who has become excited by study of the liberal arts to enrich the depth of his or her learning and experience within the British tutorial system. Course study will take place in the United Kingdom at St. John's college at Cambridge University, following his or her graduation. - Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment
The Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment is a two-stage, annual competition open by invitation to American liberal arts colleges and formal associations of liberal arts colleges. The competition begins with small exploration grants. Recipients of exploration grants will be eligible to submit proposals for larger implementation grants in a second stage. LIASE expects to support between 15 and 25 institutions over a period of five years.
ESSAY COMPETITIONS
- "Education Matters" - Scholarship open to all U.S. students age 13 or older. Respond in 250 words or less to What would you say to someone who thinks education doesn't matter, or that college is a waste of time and money? Deadline October 31.
- "Top Ten List" Scholarship - Scholarship open to all U.S. students age 13 or older. Respond in 250 words or less to Create a 'top ten list' of the top ten reasons you should get this scholarship. Deadline December 31.
- "Make your Mark" Scholarship Essay Contest - This scholarship is available to inbound and outbound study abroad students and are challenged to submit a 500-word essay that answer the questions: "How will an international education help me make a difference in the World?" Essays must be submitted usually by March 1 of each year.
- Campus Discovery $5,000 "Value of College" Scholarship
Open to U.S. citizens or legal residents currently enrolled at (or recently graduated from) any 2-4 year college in the U.S. Complete the survey on their website and then respond in 200 words or less to What have you gotten out of your college experience and why has it been valuable to attend? Deadline January 31.
