Conditional Admission
For beginning students, the admissions process consists of two steps:
  • Submit the following materials: a) the graduate application form; b) transcripts of previous college credits; c) the application fee; and d) a copy of your Texas Teacher Certificate or passing scores under the current standards of the Texas Higher Education Assessment Test (THEA) to: Graduate Admissions, School of Education, University of St. Thomas, 3800 Montrose Blvd., Houston, Texas 77006-4626. International students must also submit TOEFL scores.
  • Schedule and complete a personal interview with the MEd Program Director. To schedule the interview, contact the Program Director at 713- 525-3525.
  • Graduate students are advised to go through Regular admission prior to the beginning of course work. Students accepted for Conditional admission may take six (6) graduate hours towards a MEd degree before Regular admission is completed. If a student has not completed regular admission to the MEd program and has completed six (6) graduate hours, the student may register for up to six (6) additional hours with permission of his/her academic advisor.

Regular Admission
The following additional materials are required before regular admission status can be evaluated by the faculty:
  • Graduate Record Examination scores (General Test Only);
  • Official transcripts of previous college credit sent directly to the School of Education from the issuing institution.  Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by a transcript service approved by the University of St. Thomas and an official copy of the evaluation sent to the School of Education.
  • Letters of recommendation from three Professional Educators, (experienced teachers, principals, or supervisors who are or have been employed full-time in instructional settings) or from others subject to the approval of the MEd Program Director; and
  • A copy of their Texas Teacher Certificate or passing scores on the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA).

Submit all materials to: Graduate Admissions, School of Education, University of St. Thomas, 3800 Montrose Blvd., Houston, Texas 77006-4626.

Special Student Admission
School district employees may enroll for particular graduate level courses through contractual arrangements with participating school districts. Other area teachers may choose to enroll for summer workshop courses by simply completing an abbreviated registration form. Such students are categorized as Special Students and have not been admitted to the regular graduate program. If a Special Student later decides to seek a graduate degree, he or she must then apply for Regular admission. Courses completed by “Special Students” may or may not be applied toward a graduate degree. Admission as a Special Student does not guarantee admission as a degree-seeking graduate student.

Pending Admission
The Education Graduate Committee may recommend Pending Admission status for some students. These students may qualify for Regular Admission status after specific conditions are met.

Counseling
Applicants will be counseled during the admission interview into one of the specialization (resource) areas and will be assigned an academic advisor. Following admission, students will meet with this assigned advisor prior to each registration period to determine course selection.
