Bishop Flores Named New Bishop of Diocese of Brownsville
Bishop Daniel E. Flores, STD, who was part of the formation faculty of St. Mary’s Seminary, was named the new bishop for the Diocese of Brownsville in Texas. Bishop Flores will succeed the Most Reverend Raymundo J. Pena, the longest serving active Hispanic bishop in the United States.
Bishop Flores comes to Brownsville from the Archdiocese of Detroit, where he was ordained a bishop in 2006. As the auxiliary bishop of Detroit, he served the growing population of Hispanic Catholics.
Prior to his appointment in Detroit, Bishop Flores served as a priest in the Diocese of Corpus Christi and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. In August 2001, he was sent to the Houston to be part of the formation faculty of St. Mary’s Seminary and the teaching faculty at the University of St. Thomas School of Theology. He taught courses in Patristics, Medieval and Thomistic Theology and Modern Catholic Literature. In 2002, Bishop Flores was named vice-rector of St. Mary’s Seminary.
