UNDERGRADUATE - FIRST TIME FRESHMEN
Mendenhall Achievement Center
The Mendenhall Achievement Center was established at UST in 2008 as the result of a gift to the University from Trini Mendenhall Sosa, the former owner of Fiesta Mart, Inc., and a former board member of the University of St. Thomas.

The Mendenhall Achievement Center is located centrally on the UST campus in Crooker Center. The Center provides a professional support team to assist students in achieving their goals while enrolled at UST. Services located at the center include advising, mentoring, tutoring and counseling.

A limited number of Mendenhall Grants are available through an application process to eligible students completing the Mendenhall Summer Institute, an academic program for first-time incoming freshmen that focuses on English and mathematics.

The Mendenhall Summer Institute
The Mendenhall Summer Institute is a 5-week program for a select group of 50 incoming freshmen with proven academic abilities and involvement in co-curricular activities. This program allows these students to start early on their college education, in addition to having an opportunity to earn a grant for tuition at UST.

The Program
The Mendenhall Summer Institute offers the following advantages for students selected to participate in this program.

College Credit. The program will include introductory courses in college-level English and mathematics, designed specifically to prepare students for the rigors of college-level studies. Instruction in English will be an intensive study of grammar, usage and development of analytical and writing skills necessary for college-level courses. The mathematics course will cover practical problem-solving topics.

Financial Assistance. Students who have successfully completed the Mendenhall Summer Institute are eligible for annual Mendenhall Grants of a minimum of $2,000, contingent on acceptable academic progress and financial need.

Support Outside the Classroom. Students will also have opportunities to participate in social activities, receive individualized tutoring and improve their information literacy skills through library and computer instruction.

Who is Eligible
Any student who is applying to UST can request admission to this program. However, ideal candidates will:

  • Meet minimum admission criteria which includes: A combined Math and Critical Reading SAT score of 1070 with at least a 500 each in both the Math and Critical Reading sections, a high school GPA of 2.8, and a ranking in the top 50% of high school class
