Science & Math Summer Institute
Incoming college freshmen who want to get a start on their college classes can apply for the Science & Math Summer Institute. The program is part of the Department of Education’s College Cost Reduction Access Act/Hispanic-Serving Institutions program (CCRAA-HSI). A main priority of the grant is to increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students attaining degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
The 5-week program, to be held July 6 – August 11, 2010, offers courses in Mathematics and Introduction to Scientific Research Methods for a total of 6 credit hours. A select group of 25 students will receive intensive personalized support and mentoring during the summer institute.
Eligibility
Students must meet admissions requirements for the University including:
- 1070 SAT (Math and Critical Reading only, with at least a 500 in each of these sections), or 23 ACT
- 2.8 high school GPA
- Top 50% ranking in high school class
Cost
Total cost is $500 and includes:
- Tuition
- Room & board for 7 days a week for 5 weeks
- Scholarships may be available after the second year based on academic achievement, participation and financial need
Dates
Tuesday, July 6 – Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Students must check out of the residence hall by 10am on Thursday, August 12, 2010.

Summer Institute application must be postmarked by:
May, 1, 2010
Students must be admitted to the University of St. Thomas for the fall of 2010 to be considered for the Summer Institute.
