What to Bring If You're Living on Campus
Unlike being away for a few weeks, living away from home is an adventure that requires a certain amount of preparation. You'll need to be prepared for all sorts of events and weather and make sure you have what you need to personalize your new home.
If you will be living in the new residence hall, the University provides beds, desks, desk chairs, dressers, a micro-fridge, and window coverings. Students living in Augustine Hall will be receiving information about what to bring.
You should bring the following:
- Shower curtain, towels, washcloths
- Laundry basket or bag and detergent
- Pillow, sheets, bedspread, blankets
- Desk lamp
- Broom and dust pan
- Waste basket and liners
- Power strip with internal safety circuit breaker (extension cords are prohibited)
- Coat hangers
- Clothes for a variety of seasons and events
- Alarm clock or clock radio
- Dictionary, thesaurus and calendar
- Can opener, cups, microwave-safe dishes and ice bucket (ice machine is available)
- Scissors and sewing kit
- Iron (to be used only in laundry rooms or kitchens)
- Popcorn popper and automatic coffee pot (open-faced electrical appliances are prohibited
- Plasti-Tak wall adhesive to hang posters, etc. (the use of tacks, nails, double-sided tape or carpet tape is prohibited)
- Mattress pad
- Telephone (voice mail is provided so no answering machine needed)
- Computer, printer, Ethernet card (if computer isn't Ethernet-ready)
- First aid kit, flashlight, batteries, tool kit
Since you will be sharing your room, it will be important that you and your roommate agree on decorating it. You'll also want to discuss who's going to bring what in terms of TV, stereo, DVD, rugs for the tile floors, etc. Although the rooms are adequate in size, remember that there is not a lot of storage space for unnecessary items. Additional information regarding housing rules and regulations may be found in the Residence Life Handbook.
Have fun packing, and we'll see you soon!
