ROTC Success Stories
While many University of St. Thomas class of 2011 graduates ponder graduate school and job searches, Alan Llanas and Linh Tran had a job waiting for them. They stepped off the commencement stage ready to serve their country. Both students received generous scholarships that covered the full cost of tuition, books, meals and housing.
Alan Llanas Class of 2011
Alan Llanas was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army on May 12, 2011. He was inspired to join ROTC by the memory of his grandfather, who immigrated to the United States and earned his citizenship by serving in World War II.
“ROTC taught me to take initiative,” Llanas said. “There are people who talk and people who do. ROTC taught me how to be the kind of leader who takes action. My studies in political science and international studies helped me better understand cultural differences and political and military situations around the world.”
Linh Tran Class of 2011
After participating in Klein High School’s Junior ROTC program, Linh Tran saw the how the program could maximize her career and personal potential. Tran, who earned a degree in chemistry and biochemistry in May 2011, will commission to the United States Air Force in December.
“I like being part of something bigger than myself,” Tran said. “I like the structure and the camaraderie and working on a team. Being in ROTC has helped me develop as a leader and has improved my self-confidence and maturity.”
