Office of Volunteer Opportunities (OVO)
Meet The Director
A head shot of Ellie Collier, Director of the Office of Volunteer OpportunitiesEllie Collier, Director of OVO, invites all prospective volunteers to call or drop by our office. We are ready to assist you in finding a volunteer placement that matches your interests.
You may volunteer for one-time events or on an on-going basis. If you want us to address an issue that is important to you, we are open to adding new opportunities and programs.
The Office of Volunteer Opportunities (OVO) provides to UST students, staff, faculty and alumni a resource to increase personal and academic growth through community service. OVO offers access to hundreds of volunteer opportunities for individuals and for groups, including one-time events and on-going service. Benefits for the volunteer include:
  • gaining work experience,
  • exploring social issues,
  • working with diverse groups of people,
  • exercising leadership skills,
  • connecting classroom theory and practical application,
  • sharing energy and ideas,
  • expanding capabilities, and enhancing understanding of the role of citizen.
OVO reflects the commitment of the University of St. Thomas to service, to living out the values taught at the University, and to having a meaningful impact on the larger community. The office is located in the Michael Leavitt Room on the second floor of Crooker Center. Drop by, call us at 713-525-3800, or email us at ellie@stthom.edu for information and assistance.

Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
On May 1, 2007, OVO honored Dr. Joseph McFadden, history professor and President Emeritus of the University, at his retirement.  In 1991, Dr. McFadden co-founded OVO with Michael Leavitt, an outstanding alumnus of UST who served as the first director of the department.  Several of the original volunteers who worked with Michael attended the luncheon and spoke fondly of their memories of Dr. McFadden, Michael, and OVO.   Both Dr. McFadden and his wife, Norma, addressed those attending, offering their own happy reflections.  They were joined by Marianne Ivany, wife of the current President, who presented flowers to Norma McFadden and praised her grace and capability.
