|Letter from the Director
It is such a pleasure to have your student here with us in the University of St. Thomas Residence Hall community, and we are excited about all the possibilities of learning and living together in an environment lead by the traditions of the Catholic Church.
It isn’t easy balancing the workload of a student, being an active member of university organizations and enjoying campus life at UST. Your student couldn’t do it without your help. Parents and family play a huge part in the lives of on-campus students, and we invite you to support your student, as they become a college resident.
There are lots of ways you can get involved and still help them to have a sense of autonomy. Encourage them to assume responsibility for attending their classes and participating in extracurricular activities. A common situation that comes up may be a roommate issue or disagreement. These are perfectly normal, and you can encourage your student to talk with their roommate themselves to help work out the problem. The flow of open and honest communication builds trust and respect while the students are living together and gives them the tools they need to work out similar problems in the future.
Your student may also feel overwhelmed by classes and other commitments. Remind them about the great hall programs provided by their Residence Life hall staff that deal with time management, prioritizing and organization. Don’t forget the social programs like Wonderful Wednesdays and Celts in the Courtyard that lead to fun and friendships.
With your help and support, your student will grow and learn about opportunities to enhance their college experience. Thank you for your participation as we work together for your student!
