Athletic Trainer

Athletic trainer: Shusaku HayashiShusaku Hayashi enters his second year at University of St. Thomas as the Athletic Trainer.  Hayashi’s primary functions in the UST Athletic Department include providing prevention, assessment, management, and rehabilitation of injuries and exercise-related illnesses, being a liaison among the athlete, coaches, team physicians, other health care providers, and parents regarding health status and care of the athlete, and managing the Athletic Training facility.  Hayashi is a staff member of Memorial Hermann Ironmen Sports Medicine Institute that coordinates and provides Athletic Training services to the Greater Houston community.

Hayashi has been certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification for 10 years.  The native of Osaka, Japan flew to the United States desiring to become a Certified Athletic Trainer after graduating from Soka University in Tokyo, Japan in 1997.  Hayashi received his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from The University of Alabama in 2001 where he was an Athletic Training student for the Crimson Tide.  He then went on and received his Master of Science degree in exercise science in 2003 from University of Central Arkansas where he was a graduate assistant Athletic Trainer from 2002 to 2003.  Hayashi continued to work for the university as a faculty Athletic Trainer until 2005.  While he was there, Hayashi covered a variety of the Bears’ athletic programs including football, baseball, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, volleyball and softball.

Hayashi left University of Central Arkansas in 2005 and began to work with high school student-athletes.  He especially enjoyed working for North Little Rock High School, one of the largest high schools in the state of Arkansas, as the school’s only Athletic Trainer from 2006 to 2009.  Deciding to switch back to a collegiate setting, however, Hayashi took a position and worked at Arkansas Tech University as the head football and men’s basketball Athletic Trainer for 2009 - 2010.  Hayashi and his wife, Bonnie, moved to Houston in 2010 after having lived in Arkansas nearly for a decade.

In addition to his Athletic Training certification, he is licensed by the Texas State Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers.  He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Southwestern Athletic Trainers’ Association, and the Texas Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Hayashi and his wife reside in Pearland and have a five-month-old daughter, Isabelle.  In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, exercising, and fishing.
