Are you a commuter student?
Think of the following issues and questions before your UST career begins…

Transportation Issues
How am I getting to campus? Is there another way besides driving that can get me to campus?

If I’m driving, where will I park? It is $75 to park in the garage for the semester-do I want to pay that or do I take my chances with street parking? Can I afford gas? What about tolls? Should I carpool? What do I do if my car is towed? What should I do in case of emergency?

If biking to campus, where will I park my bike? How will I carry everything I need on my bike? What happens if it rains?

If walking to campus, what are the safest routes?

Daily Concerns
Where am I going to eat each day? Should I eat on campus? What does a meal plan cost? Check with Aramark (Crooker Center). Can I bring food with me to campus? Where can I heat up a meal? Can I afford to eat out on a daily basis? What places are close to campus?

*I have too many books to carry-are there lockers I can rent? Yes, Jerabeck and Crooker have lockers available. Stop in Student Activities for information on the ones in Crooker.

Does my schedule have breaks in it? What am I going to do during times when I am not in class but I am on campus? Can I do homework during that time? Could I meet with friends, a study group or maybe a professor? Could I work out at Jerabeck? If I do work out, there is a shower at the gym so I’ll need to remember that, hmm…what will I need to pack?

Are there any student organizations I am interested in? Student Activities Board (SAB) and Council of Clubs (COC) are two great places to start. Where can I meet people? At SAB or COC meetings as well as club fair. Is there anything to do on campus at nights and on the weekends? Lots of programs are held throughout the year-look for advertisements in the glass cases and bulletin boards around campus. You may get email advertisements from Student Affairs so don’t delete those. Intramurals and Sport Clubs are also a way to get involved. We also have a Women’s Volleyball and Men's Soccer team so home games are a must to attend!

Academic Issues
What is most important to me at UST? What are my priorities? How can I most effectively spend my time? Where can I meet other students who share my interests? There are many academic clubs on campus. Check with the Office of Student Activities (first floor Crooker Center) for club information.

Where can I study? The Old Bookstore in Crooker might be a good place or the library is always quiet. The Alumni Lounge in Crooker is also pretty quiet.

Where can I find a tutor or other forms of academic help? The Learning and Writing Center is great. The Academic Advising Center is on the 2nd floor of Crooker Center and they are very helpful. Where can I learn to manage stress, whether it’s academic or personal? Health, Promotion and Wellness or Counseling and Disability Services are great resources.

Issues at home
Is my family supportive of my decision to go to college? Where and when do I get the most support? Are they happy that I stayed in Houston? What if my family lives out of town? How are they handling the adjustment of my leaving?

Is my home life conducive to studying? Is there a special place at home specifically for me to work on schoolwork? Do I need to discuss this with my family, especially younger siblings?

Do I need a job?

If I have a job currently, is it convenient to my class schedule? Is it adding stress to my life? Could I find a better job?

If I need a job, would it be better for me to work on or off campus? How much do I need to make per hour? When would it be best for me to work? Where is Career Services? 2nd floor of Crooker Center and the staff is very helpful!

What are my other responsibilities besides school and myself? How can I better prioritize those responsibilities?

If I’m living at home, do I want to live closer to school next year? How can I afford an apartment? Can I live with other people? How many people? What types of people?

Am I eating right?
Am I taking care of myself?
Am I getting enough sleep?
Am I happy?
