C.E.L.T.s: Creating and Educating Leaders of Tomorrow
A comprehensive 4 year leadership program at the
University of St. Thomas beginning in the Fall of 2006. |
Year One-Creating Phase
This phase will consist of the training or skill-based workshops to help emerging leaders as they begin their leadership journey at UST.
Typical workshops to be offered in the fall and spring semesters for their first year will include: These topics could also be addressed at the Leadership Summit.
- Being good members
- Teambuilding and teamwork activities (including community service opportunities)
- Listening skills
- Public speaking
- Fiscal responsibility*
- Recruiting members*
*sessions are directed towards students already in leadership positions. |
Year Two-Fall Semester-Educating Phase
Komives book, Exploring Leadership, will be used.
This phase will focus on the theories, principles and the history of leadership. This will introduce students to group dynamics and the broader/big picture of leadership.
Typical activities for this phase:
- A weekend or overnight retreat/seminar addressing the above topics.
- Two other workshops offered later in the semester as follow up to the retreat (focus/discuss goals; include an etiquette dinner).

Year Two-Spring Semester and Year Three-Fall Semester-Leading Phase
This phase will focus on the students’ interaction with others and incorporating what they have learned into their real-world experiences. Students will be given 2 semesters (i.e. calendar year) to complete this phase.
Typical activities for this phase:
- Attending a leadership conference (off-campus)
- Assistance in running for an official/titled position (interview and resume prep with Career Services)
- Pairing up with a leadership mentor or coach
- Shadowing a current leader (SOC Presidents)
- If they’re already in a position, receiving feedback on how they run a meeting, committee, etc. (advisor, peer review and mentor review)
- Presenting a leadership topic to the students in the educating phase

Year Three-Spring Semester-Tomorrow Phase
This phase will focus on a capstone experience for these students.
Typical activities for this phase:
- Capstone leadership course
- Finalizing their leadership transcript
- Graduation ceremony
- Study Abroad
- Participation in Career Services’ Insights program
- Research symposium
- Dinner with Dr. and Mrs. Ivany (practical application of etiquette skills)

Year Four-Fall and Spring Semester-Tomorrow Phase continued
This phase will focus on these students preparing for their careers and serving as mentors or coaches of students in the “creating” phase of their leadership journey.
Typical activities for this phase:
- More focus on job and graduate school applications with feedback and workshops geared towards improving in this area
- Book club that meets twice a semester (once to share the book they’ve elected to read and why and second to share the book review with other participants)
- Being a mentor or coach to emerging leaders
- Community service component
- Participating in lessons in leadership (alumni presentations sponsored by Alumni Relations)
- Reflecting on their experiences online (journal style)
