STUDENT GOVERNMENT
SGA Committees
The Student Government Association represents the student body in University and Senate committees which meet regularly to discuss student needs. Ad Hoc committees are created throughout the year as need arises. If you have any ideas or concerns about the University, please email your respective Senator in the committee which your comment applies. If you are unsure of where to direct your comment, contact Misbah Khatri at sgavicepresident@stthom.edu
 
University Committees
Academic Committee
To maintain academic standards and regulations in undergraduate programs and to recommend revisions in them; to hear appeals from undergraduate students for exceptions to the University’s academic regulations; to receive faculty reports of cases of undergraduate academic dishonesty, hear appeals and maintain confidential files on reports and hearings on the subject.

Campus Life Committee
To review bookstore and food service customer satisfaction and to make recommendations for improvements; to identify and assess the needs and interests of students, faculty, administration and staff in the areas of health and well-being; to review policies and programs regarding smoking, drugs, alcohol and health-related concerns; to recommend and support programs which promote the health and well-being of the University community; to oversee the general safety and health of the campus environment and to advise the University on the conditions and activities that might affect the safety and well-being of the campus environment.

Chapel of St. Basil Committee
To oversee the University’s responsibility to maintain the aesthetical and architectural legacy of the Chapel; to review all changes in interior or exterior designs, in purchase and placement of interior furnishings and in the overall aesthetic character of the Chapel of St. Basil.

Curriculum Committee
To oversee the curricular offerings of all undergraduate programs in light of the University’s mission; to recommend or withhold recommendation for all proposed additions, deletions or other changes in courses and programs; to review current course and program offerings for the purpose of eliminating courses infrequently offered or under enrolled; to serve as a board of arbitration on interdepartmental curricular matter of dispute at the request of the concerned department Chairs; to review and make recommendations through the Vice-President for any proposed changes in the core curriculum; to submit all recommendations to President and other appropriate administrators, normally through the minutes. Ultimate authority on all matters of major importance considered by Curriculum Committee rests with the Board of Directors.

Graduation Committee
To plan the graduation events: the reception for December graduates, the Spring Honors Convocation, the Baccalaureate Mass and the May Convocation

Library Committee
To advise the Director of Doherty Library; to act as liaison between the library and the faculty and students; and to make recommendations regarding budgetary matter and holdings.

Social Justice Committee
To assist the University and the community at large in addressing pressing social justice issues in light of Catholic tradition and teaching; to foster collaboration between the Diocese of Galveston-Houston and the University in dealing with social justice issues; to identify areas in need of research and study; and to bring opportunities to work on social justice issues to attention of the University community.

Undergraduate Research Committee
To promote student research by soliciting and screening projects, and to identify potential grant sources for undergraduate research.

University Mission Committee
To review periodically the University’s mission statement and recommend changes, and to study and make recommendations to the President or other University officers or committees concerning how the mission of the University, in light Ex Corde Ecclesiae, is to be fostered in the various areas of campus life.
 
Senate Committees
Academic Affairs Committee
The Academic Affairs Committee will address complaints and suggestions of the students concerning administration and faculty. This Committee will work with the administration to maintain communication with the student body on all academic issues. It will also address specific areas such as graduate student representation and the writing and implementation of any Constitutional amendments. 

Finance Committee
The Finance Committee will address complaints and suggestions of the students concerning the allocation, spending, and adjustment of all Student Activity funds. This Committee will be responsible for obtaining, inspecting and reviewing any financial records pertaining to Student Funds. The Committee shall report all findings to the SGA including any records or policies inconsistent with the SGA Constitution or By-Laws and update the SGA as to the status of all accounts that contain Student Funds. This Committee will also work with the administration to maintain communication with the student body on all issues concerning Student Funds. This Committee will also address all issues pertaining to tuition and financial aid issues. The committee co-chairs shall attend any fiscal closeout meetings involving student activity fee recipients.

Operations Committee
This committee will review the constitution and update any necessary changes. They will look for any discrepancies and will report to the SGA for approval and amendments if necessary.

Recycling Committee
The committee implements any recycling program for the University and seeks to improve the campus environment.
